Now there are less than thirty left. By bringing people together over food and drink, these cafés helped to break down barriers. They were the first locations in Bombay where anyone from any culture, social class, or religion could find a cool haven from the heat of the city while enjoying a cup of chai, a light snack, or a filling dinner. Tables were shared by people from different walks of life, and they rubbed shoulders and shared meals.
